If you’re in the Des Moines area this weekend, Laura will be signing copies of her book at the Jordan Creek Barnes & Noble this Saturday, August 27th from 1:00-3:00pm. This Barnes & Noble is located at Jordan Creek Mall, 101 Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines.
When I first had the idea for this site, I wanted it to be a lot more than Iowa travel. I wanted to be able to showcase all of the great things about this state. One of the greatest things of all is the PEOPLE. So many amazingly creative people call Iowa their home, and I love being able to learn more about some of them. Also, I love being able to share them with all of you. These people will be showcased in a new feature on my blog called “Iowa Spotlight.” This Iowa Spotlight will feature all kinds of Iowans from all backgrounds and all occupations, each unique and special in their own way.
It is with great pleasure that I introduce my first featured Iowan, Laura Jensen-Kimball. Laura is someone I have known for at least 25 years, and she is probably one of the busiest moms I know. In addition to the many other hats she wears– mom, nurse, wife, she has now added ‘published children’s author’ to her list of accomplishments. She graciously agreed to take some time to tell us all a little about herself and her book MOMSTER.
Tell us about yourself.
I am a married mother of four, who likes to spend time with family, friends and write in my spare time. Delivering babies was my professional occupation for twelve years and I am currently studying for my Masters in Nursing Sciences.
Now, tell us about MOMSTER!
MOMSTER is an award winning, hair-raising story about a boy who after ignoring his mother’s repeated requests, realizes what a grave mistake he has made. Mom, who is loving and kind by nature, has had it. Her frustration shows as she morphs from her peaceful self into a MOMSTER. Understanding quite quickly that his actions were the cause of this terrifying transformation, he apologizes. The mother quickly forgives and alters back into her delightful self. The young boy wants to warn anyone who will listen of the potential threat hiding in everyone’s mom. MOMSTER will thrill and chill every child between the ages 4-10. There is a lesson of action and reaction that every parent can relate to and will enjoy discussing with their child. For more information about MOMSTER’s awards go to Wackystackbooks.com
Were any of your children the influence behind the boy in the story?
Every single one of them. My teenage boy probably the most. Why do I have to get loud and angry before my kids do what I say? How much simpler life would be if they listened the first time around.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
This question makes me smile because it’s writing I’d like to do when I’m not mothering. I’m at the stage with my children that if I’m not driving kids around, it’s meal prepping, laundry, or some other mundane parental activity.
How many books have you written? Which one is your favorite?
I’ve written eight children stories thus far, only one has been published. My favorite story is called, The Lonely Lap. It was my first official story and my mother illustrated it. The sentiment is heart-warming and I really hope it gets published.
How long does it take to write one book?
MOMSTER took 18 months from brain-storming to publication. Most of my stories take several months. Although, my last story, The Dreambird, was written in a few days. It came to me at night, I couldn’t sleep and as soon as the sun came up, I was writing.
What is the most surprising thing you have learned in creating your books?
The massive amount of work every tedious step takes.
Tell us three interesting/crazy things about yourself?
I love scary, creepy things and even love scaring my children.
I can’t stand “mouth-noises.” Imagine me at the dinner table with my kids. I have to take deep breaths.
I have delivered a baby with my bare hands. It was not intentional but more of a big surprise.
